When dealing with burns, immerse the burn in cold water with some ice in the water – you want the water cold not freezing. The water will eliminate the pain of the burn almost instantly. More importantly, water will stop the burn from continuing to damage the skin. Remember how bacon continues to cook after you remove it from the fire? Burns need to be put out.

Burns are measured by degree and the amount of area burned. A first degree burn is a bad sunburn and can be serious in children when it involves the whole body. A second degree burn blisters and really hurts. Depending on the extent of the burn that should be seen by a doctor as it can scar or become infected. A third degree burn is a burn through the full layer of skin. It does not hurt – though the burns around it will – so it is difficult to make the distinction. Third degree burns in a only a small area can be very serious and must be seen by a doctor. Burns to the face, hands and feet are potentially very serious.

When dealing with an epileptic seizure – put nothing in the victim’s mouth – especially your fingers. Place yourself between the patient and any hard furniture so they don’t hurt themselves and wait for the seizure to end – they are usually self-limiting. After the seizure is over let the child rest, lying on their side with their head resting on their arm. Resting is very important.

Shock is something that can happen as a result of any accident. The form you may see most often is common fainting. When someone faints put a pillow under their feet, if they start to snore, turn their head to the side. If you put a pillow under their head you can cut off their breathing passages. Your job is to get the blood supply back to their head. Keep the head on the floor and elevate the feet.

If someone is bleeding heavily and they start getting restless and thirsty you should worry about shock. Keep in mind that adults can lose a whole quart of blood before you have to worry about shock – with children two cups would be alarming. Pour two cups of water on the floor and see what that looks like. Your job is to stop the bleeding and lie them on the floor with their feet up until help arrives.

If there is smoke in the house, remember to get below the smoke. Smoke rises so get near the floor. Check the door for heat. Get everyone out of the house before calling for help.

If your clothes catch on fire, fall on the floor and roll. Do not run – running flames the fire. If a coat, blanket or rug is handy use it to snuff out the fire.

The most common emergencies in the home are cuts. First aid for cuts combines elevation – keep the cut above the heart (it’s harder to push blood up hill) and direct pressure. Right now, if you push down on the top of your fingernail you will see that the skin under the nail turns white. When you release the pressure the skin gets pink. That is what direct pressure does. It puts pressure on the surface capillaries, slows down the flow of bleeding to the cut and facilitates clotting. Even a cut artery, or full amputation, will respond to direct pressure as long as you maintain the pressure.

Wounds must be cleaned before bandaging. That is particularly true of scrapes because the dirt in scrapes acts like a tattoo and will remain visible for years if not properly cleaned.

Head and face injuries bleed like mad. They can be much more frightening than threatening. Keep that in mind when you have to care for one. Direct pressure and elevation are perfect for head injuries.

A simple question...

Do you have your FIRST AID KIT/BOX?

We do, however it has landed up in the garage and forgotten. I do believe I should pull it out and sort it out.

I have a plain box, which I know is wrong, I read an article that you must have a box that keeps moist out. So I will have to really upgrade to a proper first aid kit or box.
