"Issues for students with dyslexia embarking on traditional laboratory activities When undertaking laboratory activities, students with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia may experience problems with tasks that are indicative to the laboratory activity, some of which are listed below: i) Taking accurate notes ii) Multi-sensory tasking - listening, observing, recording and reading iii) Speed of handwriting and legibility iv) Organisation of time v) Slow reading speed for accurate comprehension vi) Visual perceptual difficulties with poorly photocopied material, particularly black print on white background vii) Group work viii) Recording data and making mathematical calculations
Individual students will have trouble with several of the above difficulties, which will depend on the severity and nature of their dyslexia. Other students might experience only one or two symptoms. The list above (with the exception of (vii)) are problems that students have during a normal lecture. However, the difference with laboratory activities, students do not have the time to correct their notes, fill in the missing parts, and complete their comprehension of what is required of them while carrying out the laboratory activity.
The list above can be broken down into just four tasks, as each individual student will be doing listening, observing, recording, and reading. However, with laboratory activities not only will there be multi-tasking but also interaction with other students. Group work can be very stressful for the dyslexic student, for example being nominated as the scribe for the group. Everyone dreads this task, dyslexic or not, for all of the same reasons (listening, observing, reading) and then having to record everything for everyone else. The stress and anxiety only exacerbates the situation decreasing the performance of the dyslexic student and increasing a feeling of uselessness in front of their peers."
"Now by true multi-tasking, we don't really mean semi-automatic activities like listening to familiar pleasant music, walking, or driving a car. These tasks don't require a lot conscious higher cortical brain work, like say reading and responding to an email or answering questions when a colleague or classmate calls you to find out what was missed in an important meeting. "
This multi-tasking disability has much further ramifications in adults. In a workplace many tasks require non automatic activities to be multitasked, these tasks can often take much longer to complete.
Many recommend that Dyslexic Students should be partially separated from outer distractions, Specifically background noise.
"Researchers found that dyslexic children have more difficulty hearing in the presence of background noise. Background noise dramatically contributed to more reading errors as children had more trouble distinguishing words.
Other studies have noted abnormal responses to distracting sounds.
Failure to accommodate for auditory distractions in the classroom can result in underachievement due to inattention, missed or inaccurate auditory information, and working memory errors.
Accommodations for Students with Dyslexia: - Preferential Seating: Seating away from noise sources like overhead projectors, open doors or windows, noisy students, etc., and seating close to the teacher.
- Small Group Testing: Testing in small groups for standardized tests."
However, Sometimes a controlled background sound can assist with some tasks.
Soft gentle music, simply loud enough to drown out other erratic sounds can help a dyslexic person to focus on the tasks at hand. By eliminating outside sounds they will not be distracted and try to multitask.
Ideally someone with dyslexia should not take on duties or jobs that require serious multitasking ability's, as they either with take far to long to complete or at worst completely fail at the task.

What ever is eating at you, Must be suffering horribly.

I so agree, keeping things tranquil whilst learning or taking time out.
Temper gets you into trouble; pride keeps you there.
